I know this is a silly thing to post about but I think it is cool and figured I would share..
Yes!! I am an animal lover..
BUT
I live on a farm and I have been trying for about two years to get it to be a functioning farm that will help support my family as well. I have tried two years in a row to make a very big garden and to figure out why they die off. well first years.. serious draught.. second year.. 22 days straight of rain.. hhmm.. neither is really good in a heavy clay soil to growing plants. so.. I will approach it differently next year and see how much better I can do..
I also have been planning on raising my own animals to eat. scariest thing in the world to me.. cuz well I am a sucker and I get attached fairly quickly. That doesn't work all that well if you plan on putting them in the freezer..
Ok..I am rambling now.. anyways.. long story short.. I went to the grain store on Saturday and asked about feeder pigs.. none yet.. then they told me about someone who was giving away a full grown pig.. I called.
2 year old gilt.. I have no clue what kind.. just BIG.. has been shown.. was an FFA pig.. and wieghs in at between 400 to 500 pounds!!!.. they gave him to me.. and 100 lbs. of feed for him. I got him home on Sunday. He is not mean and loves to play with people.
Now mind you.. I did not get this pig to be a pet.. so I have to put that cuteness, no matter how huge he is, aside and remember that I am going to butcher him. This is my first time actually getting an animal for the sole purpose of slaughtering it. but I really am ok with it.. this will help my family as well as a few others.. between the costs of meat and the quality.. this was a very fortuitous call for me.
I am still going to be getting two feeder pigs in a couple of weeks but this guy will be butchered first.. wish me luck on this new endeavor and adventure..
I now have goats, horses, chickens, and now a pig..
Guess I am a step closer to being a farmer!!!
